Unconscious Bias training (UBT) as the default or preferred method to combat or reduce discrimination and prejudice in the workplace and other institutional settings, is continuing to attract significant criticisms and pushback on methodological, political and ethical grounds. In our opinion, those criticisms are warranted. Valid. And require thorough reflection.

Tackling the reproduction of racism, discrimination and exclusion at micro-levels within organisations is ABSOLUTELY necessary and although all unconscious bias training courses are certainly not created equal,  racism occurs at ALL levels of organisational functioning and processes, including at meso and macro levels (e.g. groups dynamics, institutional policies and procedures, organisational culture).

Exclusively or primarily focusing on unconscious bias to tackle racial (& other) inequality is a losing battle. Exclusively or primarily focusing on unconscious bias to  tackle racial (& other) inequality thus amounts to structural racism (and sexism, and ableism…)

Organisations serious about tackling inequality, injustice and discrimination must take a much closer look at the macro context, and its relationship to meso and micro-processes to take effective action to reduce structural violence and inequality.

This is what Beyond Bias aims to deliver. Beyond Bias Training is Race Reflections’ FLAGSHIP course. We are certain that it will take your organisation to the next level when it comes to understanding and tackling inequality, exclusion and discrimination.

The course is suitable for all helping professionals, teachers, medical staff, managers and others with an interest in psychology, mental health, social justice AND anti-racism. It is being delivered online only via zoom through presentations, discussions, videos and guided reflections.

Preparatory reading is encouraged and a reference list can be provided to that effect, before the start of the course.

  • The aims of the course are to provide definitions, concepts and insight into the influence of structural and institutional racism.
  • Definitions of intersectionality and exploring the harm of intersectional violence
  • Providing new ways of thinking about micro-meso-macro links (eg. links between unconscious bias, social inequality and organisational practices)
  • To provide an exploration of historical configurations and present-day institutional arrangements
  • To provide an exploration of power as a vector of exclusion and marginalisation (again from the micro to the macro)
  • Tools, strategies and methods to reduce structural harm including anti-racist tools

  • Grasp various conceptualisations of racism
  • Explore how racism comes to be reproduced within various levels of functioning
  • Understand strategies to limit the reproduction of racism

This is a full-day training course that is interactive, uses various methods and requires participants’ reflective and reflexive engagement (with both head and heart).

Beyond Bias, as with all courses delivered by Race Reflections is challenging. For this reason, our preference is groups of no more than 25 (maximum 30 participants). Training can be delivered online (via Zoom), or in-person depending on location. Please enquire for more information.
