Female Masculinities and the Gender War

Bio: Finn Mackay is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. With a PhD from the Centre for Gender and Violence Research at the University of Bristol, they previously spent several years working in domestic abuse prevention education training and policy, following a professional background in youth work and adult education. In 2004 Finn founded the London Feminist Network, and revived the London Reclaim the Night march; Finn has been involved in feminist activism for over twenty years and is the author of ‘Female Masculinities and the Gender Wars’ from Bloomsbury and ‘Radical Feminism’ from Palgrave.

Summary: Finn will draw from research for their book on queer female masculine identities, in the context of the current so-called ‘gender-wars’ in the UK. Finn will give some background and definitions to common terms used in these debates, the difference between sex and gender, definitions of queer theory and Radical Feminism. This will also explain terms like TERF – standing for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist and discuss Radical Feminist theory on sex and gender identities as well as explain some of the histories of the current fierce backlash against LGBTQ+ rights.
