Lucia Sarmiento’s Guest Space Talk: An Introduction to Whiteness in Psychotherapy
The culture of Whiteness in Psychotherapy does not only come from the lack of training provision on how to work therapeutically with issues of discrimination and racial trauma. It can be traced to the unexamined perspectives from which all of our theories and practice models come and the underlying racism and eurocentrism of those perspectives.
There are, however, ways in which we can use our self-reflective skills to become aware of how this culture of whiteness affects our work as mental health professionals, as well as developing our skills as culturally and racially aware practitioners so as to better support a diverse client base without perpetuating harm.
