
October Guest Space: ‘Centering Black Feminism and Black Women in Sport.’

Summary: This talk will offer an overview of my forthcoming book, ‘Say Her Name: Centering Black Feminism and Black Women in Sport’, under advanced contract with Rutgers University Press. I will highlight the main themes of the chapters of my book and emphasize the importance of a Black feminist perspective within the critical study of sport. Topics include; the politics of Black hair and women in sport, the commodification of Black sportswomen, and Blacksportswomen’s athlete activism efforts. This talk will run for forty minutes with time for questions/discussion at the end.
Bio: Dr Letisha Engracia Cardoso Brown (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and an affiliate of the Africana Studies. Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies programs at the University of Cincinnati. She holds a B.A. in Africana Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and an M.A./PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research examines the lived realities of Black women and girls in sports and education through a Black feminist lens.
