Race Reflections is looking for lived experiences voices and stories for our courses and articles and possible future books. That is to say we want to talk to people who have direct experience of inequality, injustice and oppression.
All of our contents, courses and training are centred on the lived reality of racism. We believe hearing about issues of inequality, injustice and oppression straight from ‘the horse’s mouth’, is the most effective and potent way to impact heads and hearts.
What is required?
You will need to be filmed about your experience of racism as a student, as a parent, as a lecturer, as a teacher, or an educator. Direct experience is preferred but if you have indirectly experienced racism or have seen the working of whiteness within schools and/or Higher Education settings we would also like to hear from you.
We expect everyone selected to speak for a maximum of 30 minutes. Although the final/edited product may be much shorter.
You need to be prepared to give us consent to use your testimony as a course or writing resource/inspiration/case study.
Can I speak anonymously?
On occasions, when issues are live and/or speaking pause a safety risk, we will be able to offer anonymity. That is to say record your voice only. The rate may be slightly lower but will be agreed with you.
Can I simply talk about the experiences of friends or family or cover the empirical literature?
We want to centre the lived experience of racial injustice, inequality and oppression and so we would like to primarily hear you talk about your experience. However, if it helps you to make sense of what happened to you or your child for example, that would be perfectly fine.
Is this a paid opportunity?
Yes. We will pay £50 per hour. However we do not expect that more than 2 or 2.5 hours will be needed. More than likely one hour or so will suffice. We will pay you for 3 hours regardless.
In addition you will receive free access to the course your video is used as illustration for, if it is used in an article or book, a copy of it too.
We are after a maximum of 10 varied voices and expertise. At present.
What equipment is needed?
You do not need professional equipment. You can film yourself on your smart phone or, use a DSLR camera if you have access to one. We will give you some tips to maximise the quality of the filming.
A few voices may be interviewed via zoom. So zoom is an option, if do not have access to good quality equipment.
We will run a couple of tests.
What if I get upset?
We are best placed to offer you support, signpost you and provide guidance to you. However, if you would like to discuss this opportunity or are at all unsure, please think on it and seek advice. We are happy to chat too.
I am worried, can I talk to someone?
Absolutely. Get in touch firstname.lastname@example.org or use the form below. If you want to weigh pros and cons. We will not pressure you. We may even signpost you to others.
Thank you for reading and for considering. We know how courageous this alone is.
We thank you for your on-going support.
