Rationale
Over the past two delivery periods, we have been reflecting on how to increase the reach and impact of our Certificate in Working with Racial Trauma, currently the only in-depth approved course on working with race dynamics and racial trauma in the UK, providing a dual foundation in Group Analysis and in race and racialisation related dynamics. At present, the main Certificate is only offered as a standard paid programme (approximately £1,500 + VAT), with both self-funding/community members and those whose participation is organisationally funded accessing the same payment and support structure.
So far, we have trained about 30 students across two cohorts. Although we are reaching high-quality applicants and committed practitioners, we recognise that the need for support around racial trauma is much greater than this, and that without funding, joining the programme is impossible for many.
We believe the solution to achieving our vision of impact and access is to move from a more traditional training model towards a community-based social impact model. As we transition to 100% online delivery, there is increased flexibility to make this possible.
Making the Certificate Community Accessible
We want to remove financial barriers as much as possible to allow more people to access this important learning.
We believe that knowledge about racial trauma and race dynamics should be accessible to all those working across communities, organisations, and systems.
Additionally, the Certificate was never intended to be the end of the journey. This year, we have started to offer coaching and implementation support to support students’ longer-term commitment to learning, reflection, and action. The new model will place this at its core.
The Certificate in Working with Racial Trauma Community Pathway
We are developing this route for those who aim to make a difference in their communities and are self-funding their learning.
By joining this pathway, students will be registered on the Certificate and join the Community Pathway.
The Community Pathway will provide the standard course structure (Phase 1 – 15 months). Completion of this phase will allow students to be supported for a further 12 months, enabling the learning to become much more action-focused.
The implementation phase will include support in:
– Knowledge sharing
– Community education
– Organisational development
– Community research
– Advocacy
– Local initiatives building
The Community Pathway will also provide:
– Continued learning and development
– Reflective practice and community connection
– Opportunities to collaborate with others
– Access to resources, events, and workshops
– Opportunities to contribute to community and organisational change
As part of the Collective, members will develop an action plan focused on how they will share, apply, and extend their learning by the end of Phase 1 of the Certificate.
A Sustainable Social Change Model
The Collective will operate through a longer-term community development model.
Phase 2 will be mandatory for all participants joining the Community Pathway, with ongoing contributions of £45.00 per month. It will last for 12 months, but may be ongoing for those wishing to continue to be supported.
This will help sustain the Certificate, support the community infrastructure, and enable us to continue growing the reach of this work.
Rather than a small number of people paying a high upfront cost or paying in a few instalments, the contribution of £45 per month will apply across both phases of the programme.
This allows members to access the IGA-approved Certificate, receive ongoing support, and contribute to the sustainability of the wider mission, alongside a compulsory registration fee of £150.
Building a Movement
Our long-term ambition is to develop a growing network of practitioners, community partners, and organisations working towards more trauma-informed and racially just communities.
As the Collective grows, we hope to build partnerships, attract philanthropic support, and explore future charitable structures that can further expand access and impact.
Together, we can build a network of practitioners committed not only to understanding racial trauma, but to actively contributing to healing, change, and justice in their communities.

We are considering a separate charitable structure for the Community Pathway as it develops and grows. Subject to registration status and demand, VAT may not be applicable. This will be confirmed before the start of the course.
