An introduction to the Coloniality of Power
“What is termed globalization is the culmination of a process that began with the constitution of America and colonial/modern Eurocentered capitalism as a new global power. One of the fundamental axes of this model of power is the social classification of the world’s population around the idea of race.” (Quijano, 2000). The Coloniality of Power conceptualises our modern global matrix of power which rests on the idea of race and the practice of racial oppression. It explains how systems of oppression have survived long after the colonialism that established them. The concept of Coloniality also informs contemporary Latin American decolonial thought, most notably in the sphere of epistemology, denouncing a production of knowledge that continues to centre white Euro-American experiences, and marginalising other perspectives. This introduction aims to unpack the main components of Quijano’s theory, present some of its developments and critiques.
