April Guest Space: ‘Sounds about White: Weaponizing 1066, the term “Anglo-Saxon”, and Colonial Baggage’

Dr. Mary Rambaran-Olm

Summary: This talk will highlight the importance and meaning of 1066, and the term “Anglo-Saxon” from its origins in pre-Conquest England to its weaponization by colonialists. I will discuss how the term has been used and abused throughout the Anglo-American history of colonialism as a way to reinforce whiteness and white superiority. By looking at the date 1066 in English history and the history of the term “Anglo-Saxon” we will examine how both have been manipulated over the course of the past 400 years.
